Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
