The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
