Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
