A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A particular user, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," said an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
